NDIS School Leaver

Are you an NDIS school leaver? Here’s what you need to know about making the transition to work and further education.

Transitioning from school to further study, work or other opportunities can be a challenging time for anyone. Especially people with a disability, and NDIS school leavers. But with a little preparation, this can a really exciting and liberating time for you to achieve some life goals.

The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) provides funding for supports that can help you prepare for and take part in work and education so you can live a fulfilling life beyond school. These quick FAQs will help you think about what it is you want to achieve beyond school and how you can go about making your goals a reality.

What is it that you want to do after leaving school?

The first place to start when considering your future is to think about your goals beyond school. Do you want to secure a job? Do you want support so you can live independently? Would you like to pursue study that might help you get into a career you’re interested in?

Think about the goals you have for your future and write them down so your loved ones and support services are aware of the direction you want to head in.

How do I know if I am eligible for funding to help me reach my goals?

If you aren’t part of the NDIS system yet, you’ll first need to determine if you are eligible to access funded supports to help you achieve your goals. To be eligible for funding you must be:

  • Permanently disabled or require early intervention to reduce the support you will need in the future;
  • Under the age of 65;
  • Living in Australia; and
  • An Australian citizen or permanent resident.

What can I do with my NDIS funding if I am approved?

Whether you want to further your education, get a job, live independently or drive a car, the NDIS can give you the financial aid and tools you need to support you throughout your life. NDIS provides three core funding areas:

  • The Core Support Budget which provides funding for the supports you need for everyday living.
  • Capacity Building Budget funds activities that will enable you to build your independence and life skills.
  • Capital Support Budget provides support so you can access things like assistive technologies, modifications and equipment that will make doing everyday things easier.

The funding you receive and supports you access will be tailored based on your unique circumstances and might not necessarily include funding from each NDIS budget.
