How does it work?

Respite care involves offering temporary relief or leave to primary caregivers of older people by arranging alternative short-term care options for the person they are looking after. My Aged Care and other government schemes may fund respite care for eligible Consumers.

Caregivers have a complex job, one that requires constant dedication and commitment. But, they are still humans and might need to take a break every once in a while. To ensure continued care of the elderly in the absence of their primary caregivers, NHCH offers government-funded and private-funded respite care services.

Respite care support is often available for short periods of time, which can be a few hours, days, or weeks. When your primary caregiver is on a break, you can continue to receive care in your home or an aged care facility, depending on your needs and preferences.

Respite care can be available in both planned situations and emergencies. Contact NHCH to apply for support today.

If you’d like the government to fund respite care for you, we can help determine your eligibility for the same and the right type of respite services for your needs.

How can NHCH help?

As an approved My Aged Care provider for older adults in Hunter and Newcastle, we provide multiple respite care services depending on the eligibility and needs of different consumers. These include:

Emergency respite care: If your carer has an emergency or an unexpected situation due to which they are temporarily unavailable to care for you, our emergency respite care service can help. Contact NHCH on 02 4920 1637.

Care in your home: Depending on your particular situation and needs, we can provide respite care in your home or a commuting setting. Respite care in your home involves a paid carer managing your needs in your home as your primary carer takes a break.

Centre-based respite care: It involves shifting you to a daycare centre, where you receive care during the day along with an opportunity to talk and interact with other people.

Cottage or Residential respite: Cottage respite is suitable for those seeking overnight or weekend respite care. It takes place in an aged care home and can be taken for two to three days at a time.

For those requiring constant care and support for more than a couple of days, residential respite care in an aged care home is the most suitable option.

Consumer directed care

The Regional Assessment Service will work with you to develop a personalised home support plan tailored directly to your needs. Assessors send a ‘referral for service’ to appropriate providers, such as Newcastle and Hunter Community Health, to let them know you are a new client and would like to engage their services. The provider will contact you to make further arrangements.

Alternatively, if you would like to visit or speak to a service provide to decide if they are the right fit for you, a ‘referral code’ can be sent which allows them to view your client record. The provider will review your identified needs and determine how they can assist. You then make the final decision on whether or not to engage their services.

Our goal is to empower individuals to live with confidence, dignity, and independence. If you or someone you know requires assistance, reach out to us today!
