What is Catheter and Stoma Care Support Under the NDIS?

The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) offers funding for support with catheter and stoma care for participants with disabilities. If you have a disability that prevents you from managing your continence needs or if you have recently gone through stoma surgery, NDIS may fund nurses or support workers to attend to your care and other needs.

Continence support under the NDIS may include products or support services to help participants manage incontinence, which refers to the involuntary loss of urine or faeces, a condition quite normal after stoma surgery. NDIS may fund nursing support for participants with continence disabilities or post-surgery care assistance.

The NDIS support and funding depend on your individual situation and eligibility for this support under your plan. It involves finding the best person with the skills to help you or training your existing care provider. You can seek assistance from a registered NDIS nurse or support worker to effectively manage your continence. NDIS may fund a dedicated nurse to assist with changing or cleaning your catheter or a support worker to keep your stoma clean and change the bag.

How Can We Help?

Sometimes, we may also suddenly find ourselves in need of urgent nursing care due to unforeseen circumstances, such as needing stoma care due to skin irritation. Speed is key in such scenarios. Travelling to a care facility and waiting in line may not be possible.

We have nurses trained to perform professional nursing procedures, from regular stoma and catheter management to complex wound care and injections. We can also provide specialised nursing care for your special or emergency needs. Whether you need post-surgery care or regular nursing support at home, we have experienced staff to handle all situations.

For people with disabilities who may need continence support, our trained nurses and support staff can help with catheter cleaning, catheter changing, stoma cleaning and bag change. Additionally, our staff can assist with your daily activities and personal care needs. We also have dedicated personnel to support nursing and toileting needs through the night. So, call us today to discuss your requirements.

Consumer directed care

The Regional Assessment Service will work with you to develop a personalised home support plan tailored directly to your needs. Assessors send a ‘referral for service’ to appropriate providers, such as Newcastle and Hunter Community Health, to let them know you are a new client and would like to engage their services. The provider will contact you to make further arrangements.

Alternatively, if you would like to visit or speak to a service provide to decide if they are the right fit for you, a ‘referral code’ can be sent which allows them to view your client record. The provider will review your identified needs and determine how they can assist. You then make the final decision on whether or not to engage their services.

In the event there are no services available at the time, you will be placed on a wait-list with those who have the highest level of need offered services first. Once your provider arrangements are in place, you will start receiving the assistance you need to ensure you maintain your independence.
