When Kim and Chris approached NHCH about the challenges they were facing in providing care for their son Thomas, right away we knew that our multi-disciplinary suite of services could be tailored specifically for their family.
At Newcastle and Hunter Community Health (NHCH) there is nothing more important to us than being able to support and enrich the lives of our clients. One of our goals from the beginning has been to create a safe space and service for those in the local community needing support and assistance, which is why working with Thomas and his family is very special to us.
Thomas is an adolescent living with complex disabilities resulting in the need for assistance in all activities in his day-to-day life.
Since 2018, NHCH has been working alongside Kim and Chris in providing the ongoing support Thomas needs to remain living at home, continuing to attend school and experiencing his best life possible.
At NHCH we pride ourselves on our commitment to providing the ultimate level of care and help to make every-day life easier with our highly experienced and friendly team supporting families at each step of the way.
NHCH also understand that caring for those with a disability can often leave little time to do other tasks or enjoy valuable family time. We make the effort to ensure that this time is made available to deliver the respite needed to keep the family unit functioning.
For example, NHCH completes Thomas’s bathing needs which provides a daily opportunity for the family to focus on other tasks, like the grocery shopping.
Our respite specialists also step in to provide periods of care so that Kim and Chris can have some flexibility with their time, with the knowledge their son is in safe and supportive hands.
When asked about the most important thing we’ve been able to help Kim and Chris with, they mentioned being able to interact more with their son, which is such a beautiful thing we can provide at NHCH.
Thomas is set to undergo an operation soon and the team at NHCH are already preparing for the 24-hour care he will require following the procedure.
